Monthly Review

My year end review, well, maybe.

by Gav Leave a Comment

monkeythinking.jpgI am thinking of doing a review for the year, but I don’t feel like going through the numbers on the blog this time. There were some major changes in my career, and life and it led to change of my trading style and trading instrument. I left my old job, and I left Singapore. I migrated to Melbourne, Australia taking up a consultancy job. Difference of time zone kinda ‘forced’ me to start looking into currency trading in details. In term of trading profit, yup, this is another positive year for me. The figure is roughly around 10% for the year.

I gave some thoughts about my trading. Trading is something that I really love to do. Maybe it is because, I am still doing it in part time basis. No financial pressure is affecting my trading activity at the moment. I am not sure if I happened to go full time, can I still enjoy the game like I do now? Well, I can’t answer it now. At least, for now, I love this game.

I have experienced the thoughts of ‘I hate my current job’ or ‘I should start trading full time and leave the stupid job’ phase. I believe, most of part time traders experienced this during their trading journey. However, I come to realize that, I love trading the market, but it is not an excuse to leave my current profession. Part time trading can be challenging, fun, profitable, and most important , relaxed. Full time trading is a totally different phase of career, it is a career switch, a life change etc. It requires proven skills, track record and capital. I will do that, when the time comes.

I am in the new country, new culture, new life. There are problems and challenges ahead. But I am sure trading is still part of my life for the coming years.

Month in review : September 2007

by Gav Leave a Comment

My last review of monthly trading result was at March. The relocation, new job and new timezone etc forced me to make certain changes in my trading. Well, in short, I am still trading dummies. I start day trading Forex actively since mid of September. Here is the review of my day trading so far. I am not sure if I am going to review my result online regularly, if I found myself under pressure because of this, I will just stop it.

All right, September, I day trade Forex exclusively. Started from mid September, I made 19 trades. Unintentionally, all were Long trades. I am refining my dummy trading on Forex along the way, such as choosing a right time frame that suits my current work, risk appetite, and time zone. Towards the end of the month, it was kinda tough as I saw my trading result started to slip, partly due to over trading and taking sub par setups. Forcing myself to get disciplined again, I was lucky to catch the run of EUR/JPY.

Here is the summary:

  • Number of trades: 19
  • winning trades: 9 (~47.3%)
  • losing trades: 9 (~47.3%)
  • Break even/scratched: 1
  • Total R earned: 6.2
  • Expectancy: 0.33
  • Biggest winner: 5.78 R
  • Biggest loser: -1.02 R

Here is the performance curve.

FX challenge Week 4 Review

by Gav Leave a Comment

week4percent.gifI close the week in profit again with pathetic +0.3% (vs last week) , it was a disappointing ending. I just can’t get rid of the Friday jinx. The week’s performance was destroyed by this stupid Friday market. Anyway, I am not really satisfied with my performance this week. Firstly, I found myself watching the trading screen too frequent and have the tendency to exit a trade early even though profit target has been set. Well, some people say “You won’t go broke by taking profit”, I don’t buy this. It is important to hold on your winners to bag bigger profit, you need them to balance out your draw down period. I have no problem exiting a losing trade, since I really hate loser. The real work for me now is to hold on my winners and derive a better way to manage my profitable trades.

Well, I thought I can finish the week strong. But, hey, you don’t know what’s gonna happen next, that’s trading. Anyway, it is still a profitable week. Accept it, fool.

Month in review April 2007

I was feeling a little bit pissed when compiling this monthly review. However, after reading through my trades again, I guess, I should not bother too much. This is just the first month of my live Forex trading, and I ended the month flat (well, up +38 pips, or +0.96 R), the most important to me is, I manage to recoup all losses incurred in the early of the month. The first two weeks was a total trial-and-error period. I finished my trading plan after 2 weeks, understood and found a way to deal with my bastard broker’s widened 20-pip spread during news time, and started trading the new plan since 3rd week. Despite my Friday jinx, I was actually up 189.5 pips , or +4.74 R for the last 2 weeks of April. I should not push myself too hard over this result. I do not plan to tweak my system again for the time being, I shall execute it through out next couple of months. The only possible change might be stop trading on Friday until I find a priest to get rid of my Friday jinx, uhm…LOL

All in all, I finished the month with a whopping +38.5 pips, +0.96 R. System accuracy was just 43.10%. I might not be trading next Monday. If I do, I will update it later.

In case any auditor wants to view my trading log, I have uploaded here.

Month in review : March 2007

by Gav Leave a Comment

alexf.jpgI was thinking to skip my monthly review for this month, and walk away. I feel so bad to report the lousy performance on my blog. I did badly this month. I found it difficult to trade and in addition, I lost my focus for a moment, I made more trades than I used to. This is the first losing month of the year. I have discussed couple of points in my previous post, I am not going to repeat again here.

I keep two separate journals in order to track dummy system specifically. Interesting, in total, Dummy system produced 0.11 R this month, while my overall trading performance in March was down -3.36 R. And I experienced a string of losses in the last week of March, as I’ve mentioned in my twitter. However, these losses were small as the risk amount were around half of my normal R. Which means I had a couple of trades that required small R , and I did not increase position size.

The result is ridiculous. I made 18 trades this month, which are more than what I did in Jan and Feb. And the result is the worst of the year.

Overall performance:

  • Total P/L: -3.36 R
  • Total No. of trades: 18
  • Winning trades: 3
  • Break Even: 1
  • Losing trades: 14 (!?!?)

Anyways, it doesn’t help to bother too much over the losses. Lesson learnt, noted down, and I am ready for April. I give no chance for negativity to enter my life.

I start the year with new trading plan and focus on NQ futures (E-mini Nasdaq-100) trading and one setup. In total, only 10 trades were made this month. I closed the month with 5.31 R. Well, more works need to be done. [Read more…] about Month in review January 2007
