Tapping or knowing where to tap?

by Gav 2 Comments

Having a chance to involve in consultancy profession, I found the story below is so true. My boss (well, at least for the current project) sent this to us in the early Tuesday morning.

What are you doing today? Tapping with a hammer? or showing people where to tap? it is your choice.

Ever heard the story of the giant ship engine that failed? The ship’s owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure but how to fix the engine. Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a youngster. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship’s owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed! A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for ten thousand dollars.

“What?!” the owners exclaimed. “He hardly did anything!”

So they wrote the old man a note saying, “Please send us an itemized bill.”

The man sent a bill that read:

  Tapping with a hammer …………………… $ 2.00

  Knowing where to tap ……………………. $ 9998.00

Effort is important, but knowing where to make an effort in your life makes all the difference.

Living

by Gav 8 Comments

So I have stayed here for 2 months. how much is the basic living cost of Melbourne?

Here are the approximate daily essential expenses:

  • Rental (for a 2 bed room apartment) :AUD 44
  • Transportation (Assuming you are staying in the Zone 1, cost will raise when staying in Zone 2) :AUD 3.4
  • Food & drink (3 basic meals a day): AUD 20
  • Utility (Water & Electricity): AUD 5

So , by doing nothing, you need around AUD$72.4 (~ USD61.54) a day to live in Melbourne city.

So you need to at least earned AUD 2300 (USD 1955) a month from your day job if you wanna survive in  this city.

I am not sure about other countries, but in Singapore, it is roughly as below:

Daily expenses:

  • Rental (2-bedroom flat): SGD 40
  • Transportation: SGD 4
  • Food & Drink : SGD 15
  • Utility: SGD 4

Daily total: SGD 63 (~ USD 41)

These are all very basic livng cost, excluding alcohol, weekend dinners, entertainment etc.

Looking at this, well…work harder buddy.

No trade for the week

by Gav Leave a Comment

I did not manage to make a single trade this week. The increase of workload and stress level, kept me in a bad condition for trading. I missed to sell off of Aussie dollar this week. However, I am now considering to increase my long term Aussie dollar holding. Though the rebound might not happen immediately, it seems to be a bargain to me now. Well, let’s see how it goes.

Asian stocks market was having some wild ride as well. I am checking out my stocks position now. I have long positions in Singapore stocks market. Not too much, so far, the performance is better than my savings account in bank now.

I certainly do not like the stress and the tiredness that my current job has given me. But well, to be frank, for the sake of money, I have to find a way to deal with them. Do I sound like a modern slave? I guess I am.

The Coffee City

by Gav Leave a Comment

longblack.jpgI am a coffee addict. I drank costly espresso and cheap 3-in-1 instant coffee back in Singapore. Moving to Melbourne, I have new coffee experience. Every morning, I will have my Long black before stepping into office, and afternoon, I will have my Strong Latte for my mid day coffee break. I always wonder why does coffee in Melbourne taste better? Is it just psychological effect?

Here is something that support my observation. I found CoffeeGeek.com.

In preparation for the arrival of the Italian Olympic team, a few enterprising members of the large Italian community in that city (1 million out of 3.5 million total) decided to import the very first espresso machines into Australia and serve authentic Italian espresso. (It is important to note that Italians prefer to drink espresso coffee only, always with sugar and without milk.) These cafés quickly gained popularity amongst the Italian community, hence the tradition of Melbourne being the “coffee” city.

So , my compliment is right. Melbourne is the “Coffee City”

What is unique is that, outside Italy, the Australian and New Zealand café markets are the only other 100% espresso-based markets in the world! The US and other countries are dominated by filter style, or brewed, coffee. You cannot give filter coffee away in Australia or New Zealand. Furthermore, the Australian and New Zealand markets are unique in that the espresso based coffees are nearly always served with milk – approximately 98%, compared to 5% milk based coffees in Italy.

I have travelled extensively in the US, and I cannot say with hand on heart that most cafés there represent the espresso coffee standard of the US Barista Championship or even the World Barista Championship. It is my observation that the US espresso standard (on a national average) is where the Australian and New Zealand espresso markets were 15 years ago.

That means that there is still a lot of room for development.

Interesting article about culture of coffee and cafe. Now I know a little bit more about coffee instead of just sipping it everyday 🙂 Check it out. Cafe Culture Downunder

My experience with banks

by Gav 10 Comments

I am having some problems with the banking system in Australia. Really, this is the time, I really miss Singapore. The efficiency and the processing speed in Singapore is kinda top notch.I am not saying there is any problem with the banks here, maybe, I just need some time to adapt to the way they work.

When I first arrived in Australia, I did a online bank transfer between two accounts. Both are from the same local Australian bank. This type of transfer, in Singapore, the fund will be available immediately. I was expecting the same. The story is, I had no enough fund to pay for my new furniture due to the delay of this transfer. Yes, it took more than 1 working day to make the transfer. Unbelievable. So, I have to call up the delivery department, requested to delay the delivery. What a embarrassing experience.

Next, I went to apply for credit card. I wrote about this before. The bank sent me a letter recently , informing me the card is ‘Ready for Collection‘. Great. I brought my income statements, contracts etc to the collection point (Wait, they don’t send the card to you via mail, due to ‘security reason‘?!?!, you have to move your ass to their office to collect), which was few streets away from my workplace. Now what? The customer service officer couldn’t understand my payslip, and Australian workplace agreement. I wasted my 30 minutes sitting there. You know the result. ‘We need 2-3 working days to verify, I need to fax these to senior officer to verify again, you may give me a call 2 to 3 days later to check the status‘.

Damn.Enough.

Seriously, I miss Singapore at this point of time. I stayed in a society with high efficiency for the past 8 years, I am really having a tough time to get used of the slowness here.

You want to know more? I have similar experience in applying home phone, broadband access and arranging courier service.

I am not complaining. Ok, I am, maybe. I know that I need some time to get used of the working style here.

For the banking service, Thumbs up, Singapore. Well, though I was not a million-dollar customer to them, but they served me like a customer, not asking me to follow ‘their’ rule.

Racism? No…

by Gav

Well, I am not sure if I should put it this way. I was trying to apply a credit card from one of the banks in Melbourne city. The customer service officer, a young, beautiful white lady was serving me. Uhm…She did not seem to be keen to serve a young Asian guy like me. (Well, I was wearing nice black suit) The attitude was kinda unfriendly, lack of smile, and she did not even want to explain different cards that the bank offers. And she was annoyed when I asked about the requirement of applying a Gold Visa.

All right….3 minutes later…she asked for my income proof. And you can’t believe this, she was shock and asked “SHIT! they pay you $XXX a day!?!”.

Gav: “Yup….that’s my daily rate if you want to know..”

Then, the world seems to be changing. The sweet smile shown on the pretty face of her. I had a smooth process of card application…

What is this? Discrimination? or racism? Oh, or do I look so bad? Come on…

Anyway, this is the only weird experience I have. So far, the city and people are nice and friendly. I have nice time with local people here, in office or in pubs.

Just to note down this experience.

update: I have to close the comment section of this post. It is not my intention to discuss racism issue on here. After all, Melbourne is still a excellent place to live.
