My Weekend reading list: 02 November 2014 with 15 links

by Gav

IMG_20141028_110836_wm

I have a habit of saving good links into my getpocket apps, and read them over the weekend. I thought I would share those links here once or twice a week or so, for those who are looking for traders development materials.

This is the first post, so there might be some old links included, but these are the articles that I thought worth reading.

Have a good weekend.

Keep learning, Keep trading.

Success in Trading: Why Mindset Matters: Psychologist Carol Dweck makes an important distinction between fixed mindsets and growth mindsets. When we praise a child’s fixed qualities, we anchor their self-concepts to those qualities and, ironically, create a less resilient set of behaviors going forward . – by Brett Steenbarger – Tags: traders development – http://traderfeed.blogspot.com.au/2014/08/success-in-trading-why-mindset-matters.html

The Pro’s Process – David Blair: The third in my series of posts asking Pro Traders about their psychological processes.  Delving a little into how it feels to them when trading.  The good and the bad.  How this has changed over time and what preparation they do mentally for performing as a trader. – Tags: traders development – http://embracethetrend.com/post/24879780796/prodavidblair

Cultivating Self-Control by Enhancing Working Memory: Traders are known to complain that they formulate sound and detailed trading plans and then fail to follow through on those plans once markets are moving. Typically, this problem is attributed to emotional interference and/or a lack of discipline. – by Enhancing Working Memory – Tags: traders development – http://traderfeed.blogspot.com.au/2014/10/cultivating-self-control-by-enhancing.html

8 Things To Learn From Japan’s Biggest Day Trader ZorTrades: Bloomberg did a small profile on a Japanese day trader who made 6 billion yen last year and pretty much started from scratch to build a small fortune, it sounds a lot like the Dan Zanger story. – by Frank Zorrilla – Tags: traders development – http://zortrades.com/8-things-to-learn-from-japans-biggest-day-trader/

6 Ways To Develop The Self-Discipline Necessary To Reach Your Goals: You hear people say things like, “I don’t have the willpower to do that,” as they watch their friend order the salad instead of the fried chicken. – Tags: traders development – http://www.forbes.com/sites/amymorin/2014/10/03/6-ways-to-develop-the-self-discipline-necessary-to-reach-your-goals/

Ten Things Your Trading Track Record Says About You: Having spent a number of years in recruitment roles at trading firms, I’m accustomed to seeing trading track records. A track record is a bit like a college applicant’s SAT score: it doesn’t guarantee you admission, but it gets you in the door for a look. – by Brett Steenbarger – Tags: traders development – http://traderfeed.blogspot.com.au/2014/09/ten-things-your-trading-track-record.html

Creating a Training Program for Happiness: Ah, yes, too often traders put the key to happiness in the market’s pocket, ensuring that their mood will fluctuate with prices. That is a vulnerable state, and not one conducive to peak performance. When we refer to happiness, we’re not talking about living life with a perpetual grin. – by Brett Steenbarger – Tags: traders development – http://traderfeed.blogspot.com.au/2014/10/creating-training-program-for-happiness.html

How to Put an End to Inconsistent Trading: A core Trading Frustration in the SMBU Community is a lack of consistency with their trading. In this video below Steve Spencer and I offer some solutions to improve your trading consistency. The search for consistency is a differentiator between pro and developing trader. – by admin – Tags: traders development – http://www.smbtraining.com/blog/how-to-put-an-end-to-inconsistent-trading

Making Trading Serve Your Life and Not the Reverse: Josh Brown asks some pointed questions about the time we have left and how we want to use it. Building on Josh’s post, Abnormal Returns raises an important point: our trading and investment returns are meant to be funding the things important to our lives. – by Brett Steenbarger – Tags: traders development – http://traderfeed.blogspot.com.au/2014/10/making-trading-serve-your-life-and-not.html

Three Things You Can Do Right Now to Improve Your Life: One of my favorite quotes is from Nietzsche: “Under peaceful conditions, a warlike man sets upon himself.” In other words, when life becomes comfortable, that’s when it’s time to think about pushing boundaries and taking on worthy challenges. – by Brett Steenbarger – Tags: traders development – http://traderfeed.blogspot.com.au/2014/10/three-things-you-can-do-right-now-to.html

Most entrepreneurs aren’t born that way – Quartz: Are entrepreneurs born or made? New research by Stanford Graduate School of Business Professor Kathryn Shaw adds to the evidence on the “made’’ side of the column. The research, which examined records of 2. – by Elizabeth MacBride – Tags: traders development – http://qz.com/287818/most-entrepreneurs-arent-born-that-way/

8 Common Habits That Destroy Your Success: Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy. We do things intentionally or subconsciously that impede rather than advance our success. The first step in eliminating these destructive behaviors is acknowledging them. Here are eight of the most egregious: – by William Arruda – Tags: traders development – http://www.forbes.com/sites/williamarruda/2014/10/26/8-common-habits-that-destroy-your-success

Tony Robbins on Morning Routines, Peak Performance, and Mastering Money: Tony Robbins is the world’s most famous performance coach. He’s advised everyone from Bill Clinton to Serena Williams, and from Leonardo DiCaprio to Oprah (who calls him “superhuman”). – by Tim Ferriss – Tags: traders development – http://fourhourworkweek.com/2014/10/15/money-master-the-game/

Want to make it as a trader?: This musing on intraday trading may come off as a bit harsh and simplistic, but I think subconsciously maybe that is what I intended when I decided to pen this piece (initially as an email to a few traders friends). Here’s the premise for this piece:  trading is “blue collar” work. – by Bella – Tags: traders development – http://www.smbtraining.com/blog/want-to-make-it-as-a-trader

Postmortem after spam bots attack

by Gav Leave a Comment

This blog has recently experienced a massive spam bot attack. It was so serious that the hosting company has to take my site down before I clean up thousands of spam comments from my database.

Well, it is all good now. To prevent this from happening again, I have included some strict spam filtering rules on comment, and also, CAPTCHA plugins. So, you have to do a little math to prove that you are human before submitting comment.

Anyway, in case you were trying to get in touch, but was blocked by the filter or the math is just too difficult for you, please give me a shout in Twitter (@tradergav) . I will get back to you ASAP.

Good trading.

A small writing project : “Combine”

by Gav

Combine: a harvesting machine that heads, threshes, and cleans grain while moving over a field

I am planning to write a series of blog posts to list out each elements that I use in my trading.  While I am not sure how long will it take me to write all into blog posts, I will try my best. I see some benefits of doing this:

  1. Refresh and review of my memory and understanding of key concepts
  2. Sharing and receiving comments from readers who might be more experience than I do in some areas, so, I can learn from them.
  3. Putting my “mind-map” into words for review and correction.

From time to time, some questions such as, “Do I really understand this concept?”,  “Is this the most efficient way of working/analyzing?” pop out in my mind.  I think by spending some time to actually write down as a blog post might reveal the possible incompetence of my own, and provide me a chance to correct them. Again, this is going to take time, hopefully, time and energy permit, there will be no big delays between posts. And another important note is, I am not trying to act as an expert here, I am still learning, always do, so, just take it as reading the learning journal of a trader.

Anyway, here are some topics in my mind:

  • Volume profile
  • Auction Theory, Acceptance and Rejections
  • Volume profiling and Levels
  • Order Flow analysis
  • Tools: Charting setup, DOM and Number Bars (Footprint chart)
  • Put it together

I might add in more topics later. Hopefully, this small project will unfold into something helpful and interesting. If you are interested in following this project, the best way is to sign up the Free Trading ideas & Email Updates at the sidebar or simply follow this link.

That’s it for now.  The first post of Project Combine is coming soon..stay tuned.

Good trading.
