My trading library

by Gav 21 Comments

I’ve been thinking about listing out trading books and magazines on my shelf. I just did not have the time. Here it is. I am not grading the books, instead I am categorizing them according to my understanding and feed back after reading them. Absolutely personal opinions.

Category 1= Good reference

Category 2= Reference, but boring, I am too lazy to pick up again

Technical Analysis Explained : The Successful Investor’s Guide to Spotting Investment Trends and Turning Points– Pring

Category 3= Sometimes, I will read them again

Trading for a Living: Psychology, Trading Tactics, Money Management – Alexander Elder

Come Into My Trading Room: A Complete Guide to Trading – Alexander Elder

Snapshot Trading – Daryl Guppy

Better Trading – Daryl Guppy

Magazine : Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities

Magazine: Your Trading Edge

Magazine: Active Trader

Category 4 = Favorite list, I read them more often than others

Trend Trading – Daryl Guppy

Long-Term Secrets to Short-Term Trading – Larry Williams

Market Wizards – JACK D. Schwager

The New Market Wizards: Conversations with America’s Top Traders (A Marketplace Book) – JACK D. Schwager

Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom – Van. K Tharp

Mastering the Trade (McGraw-Hill Trader’s Edge) – John. Carter

Trading in the Zone: Master the Market with Confidence, Discipline and a Winning Attitude – Mark Douglas

Category 5 = OK list, I will only read once

The Definitive Guide to Futures Trading (Volume II) – Larry Williams

The Next Step to Share Trading Success – Leon Wilson

Category 6 = So boring, I just can’t continue

Trend Following: How Great Traders Make Millions in Up or Down Markets, New Expanded Edition – Michael Covel

How To Make Money In Stocks: A Winning System in Good Times or Bad, 3rd Edition – O’Neil

Category 7= Wasted my money and time

Making Money from CFD trading – Catherine Davey

Exploring the Mythes – Frank Watkinds (A free copy got it from a free seminar)

Magazine: Trader’s Journal

Category 8= I will continue if I have time

BreakThrough Trading – Leon Wilson

Category 9= Uncategorized, still reading

The Master Swing Trader: Tools and Techniques to Profit from Outstanding Short-Term Trading Opportunities – Alan S. Farley

I am still in the reading phase but I like the way you break down the categories. I have read a few books were I did not finish or just did not want to waste time to review because they were not worth it. I was trying to figure out a way to quickly say what you did in Cat 6 and 7 and in general order my reviews when I am finished reading. Thanks for the idea on how to do it.

I cannot help but notice you think O’Neil’s book is boring. That is the best book written on trading. The chapter on selling will make you millions. I encourage you to take the time to read it. As a trader with over 10 years in the business, I can tell the principles laid out work at a hedge fund level, investment management level, and on an individual trader level.

    Bob,
Yup, I have read a lot of good words about O’neil’s book. And yes, I hear you. I will pick up the book again, and hope I can upgrade the book to another category.

I really appreciate your comment. Thanks.

    Gav,

Like how you categorize your reading.

Don’t see ‘Tools and Tactics for the Master DayTrader: Battle-Tested Techniques for Day, Swing, and Position Traders’ by Oliver Velez and Greg Capra on your list.

One of my favorite books for talking psychology in the 1st section, and chart trading fundamentals in the latter. While there are some typos in it, I’ve got it on my “good reference” list

Good post. You make some great points that most people do not fully understand.

I like how you explained that, Steven. Very helpful. Thanks.
