Today’s Coffee thought

by Gav Leave a Comment

Something for you to think about.

Does working out in gym help your trading? Some people say regular exercise will help trader staying sharp. Well, I think it should be true. I don’t know.

But, the weight training teaches trading. How many times when you hit the gym, watching those big guys training then try to put on another 20 pounds on weight for your bench press? I know watching them is inspirational. "Man, you gotta push yourself to get a bigger muscle." Absolutely. But, what is your limit? A little Asian man like me, trying to train like a huge Caucasian is a absolute stupid move. Most of time, you will tear your muscle, injured your arms, and cause you to stay at home for 3 weeks, and can’t even lift up a 5-pound shopping bag.

Try to relate this to your trading. What would you do in gym?

Food for thought from Gavin.

I think working out helps your trading. Before I got sick I worked out twice a week with the main goal to lose weight.

I noticed that working out made me sharper at finding new opportunities in the market. I never believed it until I experienced it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I must admit that I never work out at the gym. In fact, I tried once and my butt cheeks hurt so bad the day after that I never went back haha.

Come on Hector, put your discipline in trading into gym as well.

Maybe you should do that during the day that you find yourself as a ‘lazy forex bum’. ๐Ÿ˜€

Hector, maybe you should stick to the actual gym and stay out of the showers.

Hah, I hear you Hector…my butt cheeks are killing after performing lunge exercises…its a good pain though (I hope).

I guess people go to the gym with different aims such as bulking up, losing weight etc. Mine is longevity, general health and a bit of strength. With the body heading into decline (muscle, bone density etc) after the age of 30, I’ll take all the help I can get.

With respect to trading, I find going to the gym helps in three ways:

    – Practice of discipline. If you don’t have it in you to keep looking after yourself, do you really have the discipline in you trade for a living?
    – Body-mind connection: I’ve always come back from the gym feeling better than when I left. It generates a sense of renewal and vitality, and provides a break in the day.
    – Moving on from losers: After a very bad day, it can be extremely hard to ‘move on’ if we stay staring at the screens. Going to the gym helps regain perspective, putting the day’s losses in the context of the bigger picture.

Now give me 10 press ups!

Darn! ‘Body heading into decline after age of 30’. I hear that! I just came back from morning jogging. What can I say (with short breath)? ‘I am getting old..’

I went through some weight training programs with a personal trainer back in Singapore. I realize I have been giving myself too many excuses by not doing it in Australia. Time to bulk up again!

And yes, I certainly understand Body-mind connection after a good workout in gym, and I miss that.

Here we go. Just finished my 10 press ups.
